The Be Real Game
Media Type: Game
The Be Real Game, part of the Real Game Series, comprises a facilitator’s guide and a set of materials for 40 students, including role-play backgrounders, classified ads, job profiles and job change notices. This cooperative and interactive career exploration program is delivered in groups of themed activities or sessions which are organized in three major units, needing a minimum of 25 hours to complete the activities. The objectives of each session in all three units have been related to Blueprint for Life/Work Designs. Students assume life/work roles (based on 18 sectors of the economy) and explore the budgetary and time implications of working, including career search and job changes.

The Get Real Game

Students simulate a five-year school-to-work transition plan by exploring various gateways to their goals. A minimum of 13 hours of class time is suggested to complete the sessions in the game, which include research, budget planning, job-seeking skills, and gaining an understanding of transferable skills.

Comprehensive Financial Planning for Education

This resource consists of a student workbook and a facilitator’s guide. Five modules explore educational and financial planning for students: The Career I have Chosen: Is It Worth the Money; Mastering Money and Spending Habits; Living on a Shoestring; Money for Education: Non Repayable Sources; and Money for Education: Repayable Sources. Each module includes worksheets and exercises as well as a list of print and web-based resources. Student workbook assumes career planning and goal-setting activities have been done previously.

Graduation Portfolio Assessment and
Focus Areas: A Program Guide

This Ministry handbook lays out the requirements students must meet to earn graduation credits for portfolios in the areas: Arts and Design, Education and Career Planning, Employability Skills, Information Technology, Personal Health, and Community Involvement and Responsibility. It contains sections for parents and students, as well as suggestions for models to successfully implement portfolios in secondary school.

Horizons 2000+: Career Studies
Media Type: Print Material
Career Studies aims to help students plan for their futures after secondary school. The student text is accompanied by a comprehensive teacher’s resource that clearly outlines the areas for student knowledge and skill development. Teaching strategies include brainstorming, cartoon analysis, case studies, profiles and “in the news” items, teamwork, interviewing, journals, portfolios, various visual displays, role-playing, and surveying. This resource was developed to meet the Ontario curriculum and therefore discusses the Diploma requirements for Ontario. Supplementary information would be required for BC students.

It’s A Big Menu… Choose What You Like

Resource kit, consisting of a teacher’s resource guide and a 50-minute student-produced video, addresses a range of post-secondary options for students. In particular, it focuses upon BC’s projected skills shortage. In both the guide and the video, the main themes of the program are organized as five units: Finding Your Passion, Optimism, Opportunities, Options – How to Get There, and Honour All Work.

Lifechoices: Careers
Media Type: Print Material
Part of the Canadian collection, Lifechoices, this resource consists of a student magazine and teacher guide. The student magazine is a compilation of articles from other sources, ranging from Teen magazine to Statistics Canada and includes many ‘real life’ stories as well as practical information and tips for teenagers. This resource deals with job seeking and job keeping skills, the changing workplace, and enterprise and innovation.

Nelson Career Studies 10
Media Type: print material and CD-ROM
This resource, designed to support the Ontario curriculum, consists of a hardcover student text, a comprehensive teacher resource binder, two CD-ROMs (Ontario Work Infonet and Profile Desktop 2000: Electronic NOC Career Handbook) and supporting web site (www.careers.nelson.com). The resource is focused on the process of career planning. The student text consists of the following five sections: Why Am I Doing This?, Who Am I?, What is Out There For Me?, How Do I Get Where I Want to Go? and How Far Have I Come?

Opening Doors

Opening Doors, available at www.openingdoorsbc.com, is designed to help students find information on over 1900 post-secondary programs offered in BC. The site allows students to search for programs by focus area, subject, field of study, institution, or length of the program. It allows students to compare programs by admission requirements, tuition fees, start dates, and costs. The site also includes information on student finances, on-campus student services, and a reference section detailing former students’ experiences and their transitions to either the workplace or further education.

VECTOR: Video Exploration of Careers,
Transitions, Opportunities, and Realities

Media Type: CD-ROM/DVD
VECTOR is designed to support career exploration and planning. It guide the user through a personal exploration of interests and options dealing with career planning and career development. There are links to a variety of multimedia resources, including over 1000 hotlinks and extensive databases. The main part of the resource consists of 120 short video vignettes that provide virtual field trips for students to explore a wide variety of emerging careers and occupations in a Canadian context. The careers in the video library are organized by industry, education, income, and interests.

The Third Option
Media Type: DVD
The Third option DVD introduces students to a wide array of skilled trade jobs in British Columbia. There is an introductory portion of the DVD that deals with the state of the economy and the labour market in BC and outlines some of the major industries. The rest of the DVD consists of interviews with men and women who work in various industries throughout BC. The interviewees discuss the day-to-day realities of their jobs and the salary that they earn. There is an accompanying book which provides further detail about the careers included in the DVD as well as links to resources to gather more information.

Learning Clicks
Media Type: CD-ROM
Learning Clicks is an interactive, dynamic, and informative multimedia tool to assist Grade 9 -12 students with planning for post-secondary studies. The Learning Clicks Web site and corresponding CD-ROM are designed by Alberta Learning to inform students about the importance and long-term benefits of post-secondary education, and to serve as a portal to provide students with the necessary information to assist in planning for post-secondary studies.
