Teaching Assistant
a junior scholar employed on a temporary contract by a college or university for the purpose of assisting a professor by teaching students in recitation or discussion sessions, holding office hours, grading homework or exams, supervising labs (in science and engineering courses), and other duties.
Technical institute
an institution of higher learning that grants “specialized associate degrees” in business or technology fields and are typically more hands-on learning than at a college or university.
Term
a segment of time in the academic year (i.e., four months) also referred to as a semester.
Thesis
a written paper elaborating on original research, arguing a specific view. Theses are often written for the completion of an academic degree, usually the Master’s degree.
Timetable
published several times each year, a list of all the courses and labs offered for the academic year or session—includes course ID, course number, name, time, classroom location and faculty for each course and lab offered.

Trade school
an institution of higher learning that grants “specialized associate degrees” also known as skilled trades, in business or technology and is not a college or university.
Transcript
a certified copy of the student’s academic record, showing courses taken, examinations passed, credits awarded, and grades or scores received.
Transfer credit
course credit which an institution accepts towards a degree, and which the student has not earned in the course work at that institution.
Trimester
a few universities in Canada operate on a formal trimester system, with three terms of equal length and admission to any of the three terms.
Tuition
a fee charged for educational instruction especially at a formal institution of learning
Tutorial
a session of study given by a tutor to an individual or to a small number of students.
Undergraduate
a university / college student who has not yet received a first degree / diploma.
University
an educational institution attended after secondary school for studies leading to a degree (e.g. bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate).
University College
a term used in a number of countries to denote institutions that provide tertiary education but do not have full or independent university status.
University Transfer
credit programs of study, usually in arts, social sciences, and science courses, which are transferable toward degree programs at universities.
Vocational
education prepares learners for careers or professions that are traditionally non-academic and directly related to a trade or occupation
Waitlist
a sequential computerized list of students wishing to register in a course that is filled.
Withdrawal
cancellation of registration in a course within the period indicated on the student timetable to avoid academic penalty.
Work-study
a federally funded program that makes part-time jobs available to students with financial need
